During a recent radio appearance Taylor Swift unleashed her hidden rap skills by performing an impromptu country cover of the Eminem classic “Lose Yourself.” We admit it, we lost ourselves in the music, the moment. We’ll own it. But look, if you had one shot, one opportunity to seize everything you ever wanted — which we assume is watching this video — would you capture it or just let it slip away?
Inspired by Swift’s genre bending performance, here are 8 other surprising celebrity covers we put together for your viewing pleasure!
1. Miley Cyrus Covers Lana Del Ray’s “Summertime Sadness”
Before Cyrus performs her beautiful rendition of Lana Del Ray’s “Summertime Sadness” she introduces the clip and, of course, sticks out her tongue. But what surprised us was her passion. It looked as though she was giving us her trademark move out of obligation as opposed to her usual love of the tongue-sticking-out game. When reached for comment her best friend Leslie said, “Oh she’s just being Miley.”
2. 30 Seconds to Mars Covers Rihanna’s “Stay”
Covering such a viscerally effective song like “Stay” isn’t easy, but this goosebump inducing version by 30 Seconds to Mars provides us with a unique alternative to the original Rihanna rendition. Some covers simply produce a slightly altered version of the source material, but 30 Seconds to Mars created their own distinctive version of “Stay” that’s just as powerful as the original.

3. Selena Gomez Covers Lorde’s “Royals”
When we pretend that our life is just a sophisticated movie trailer for a crazy, sexy, cool spy film — which sadly happens more than you’d think — that stylish movie trailer is always scored by “Royals.”
4. Justin Bieber covers Justin Timberlake’s “Cry Me a River”
A Justin-to-Justin “Cry Me a River” connection? You better Bel-biebe it.
5. Katy Perry covers Adele’s “Someone Like You”
Singer, actress, perfume mogul, and possible tiger Katy Perry is a
jack Jill of all trades. Having already covered Kanye West and Jay Z, Perry tackles this “What? No, I’m not crying. I just have something in my eye” classic from Adele.
6. Maroon 5 covers Taylor Swift’s “Mine”
Since Maroon 2, 3, and 4 apparently cancelled, Maroon 5 performed an entertaining rendition of Taylor Swift’s “Mine.” The stakes were raised since Swift was in the audience having fun, bopping along, singing her song, and recording Maroon 5’s cover on her cell phone.
7. Kelly Clarkson covers Britney Spears’s “Till The World Ends”
From Lady Gaga to Justin Timberlake to a classic “last dance at the prom” 90s favorite, Kelly Clarkson has made covering popular artists a staple of her live performances. Honestly, this could have said, “Kelly Clarkson sings the phone book” and we still would have watched.
Miguel’s version of “Like a Pill” is absolutely amazing for two reasons. One, we’re suckers for a stripped down version of a traditionally melodically upbeat song, and two, we love how Miguel uses his cell phone to remember the lyrics. At least we think that’s what Miguel is doing. Does Miguel possess the ability to send mental texts? Is sending mental texts available on the new iPhone upgrade? Siri, what am I thinking?
