Before The Notebook, before he stopped New York City street fights, before the “Hey girl” memes and before the Eva Mendes envy began, there was a teenage Ryan Gosling on Breaker High, a Canadian series about a bunch of kids going to high school on a cruise ship. (Hey, crazier premises are out there.) That’s when I began crushing on Gosling — pre-six packs.
On the show, which ran for just one season, Gosling played Sean, a wannabe ladies man who was really just a big old nerd — hotter than Screech but not as smooth as Zack Morris. He chased the ladies and made a fool of himself in the process, but it was clear that at the end of the day, he really was just meant to be with his fellow weirdo, Tamira (Rachel Wilson). Tamira deserved Sean because they were so painfully adorkable together, but my heart was with Gosling.
In fact, I was so obsessed with seeing more Gosling that when the show got the axe after just one season, I penned a letter to the President of UPN and signed a petition to get the show back on the air. I also forged about 50 signatures, but that’s another story.
