‘Grey’s Anatomy’ star Ellen Pompeo dishes on Katherine Heigl’s exit from the show

It’s been three years since Katherine Heigl left Grey’s Anatomy and her role as Dr. Izzie Stevens, but co-star Ellen Pompeo is finally sharing her (very honest) thoughts on Heigl’s abrupt departure in the New York Post. “Hurt feelings, combined with instant success and huge paychecks started things spinning out of control,” Pompeo says. “The crazier things got, as I watched all the tumult with Isaiah [Washington] and then the Katie thing, I started to focus on the work.” (The “tumult with Isaiah” refers to Washington’s use of a derogatory slur against gays.)

At the time, Heigl’s movie career was taking off and Pompeo could understand the lure of the big screen but doesn’t agree with the way Heigl handled things. “When Katie left, it was tough,” she says. “You could understand why she wanted to go — when you’re offered $12 million a movie and you’re only 26. But Katie’s problem is that she should not have renewed her contract. She re-upped, took a big raise and then tried to get off the show. And then her movie career did not take off.”

What do you think of Pompeo’s honesty? Do you think Heigl was wrong to leave the way she did?
