‘Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them:’ Die-hard ‘Potter’ fan weighs in with her wishlist for J.K. Rowling’s new film

As you may have heard, Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling is working on a movie about the world of wizardry called Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. The film’s announcement inspired a wave of excitement—and quite a few Twitter trending topics—amongst fans yesterday, many of whom have already started speculating about what’s in store for the saga.

Here’s what we know: Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them will be set in New York City 70 years before Harry Potter. Though it’s not a prequel, the film will revolve around a “worldwide community of witches and wizards” and follow fictitious author Newt Scamander.

Still, there’s still a lot left to the imagination, so we decided to ask a passionate Potter fan, Kelly Cannon, what she hopes to see in the new movie. We breakdown her top five below.

5. High on Cannon’s wishlist? Dragons, obviously. We know a lady from another fantasy land who’s got a few, though we’re not sure she’d be willing to share.

4. We know, we know, this film isn’t really connected to Harry Potter. Still, Cannon thinks there should be a Phoenix flying around somewhere — if only to serve as a fun easter egg for Potter fans on the hunt.

3. Since the film is set in New York City, Cannon thinks there should be some depiction of the rampant sewer critters that sparked the urban myth that alligators resided underground (and, not to mention, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles).

2. Cannon accepts that it wouldn’t make sense for Harry and co. to make cameos. Instead, she’d like to get a glimpse at younger versions of some older Potter characters. I mean, who wouldn’t want to see what Neville’s grandmother Augusta Longbottom was like before she became so stern?

1. Cannon points out that the movie takes place 70 years before Harry Potter, which puts the timing right around the roaring ’20s. Were speakeasies like the 21 Club actually wizarding hangouts? Was Gatsby secretly wizard? And if so, who wants to start a petition to get Great Gatsby star Leonardo DiCaprio to pop up with a wand and a cape? (Hey, a girl can dream!)

Okay, now it’s YOUR turn. What do you want to see in Rowling’s new film? What has to be there?
