One of the greatest game shows of the early ‘90s celebrated a huge birthday yesterday. (And yes, we know we’re a little belated, but we were busy celebrating!)
Legends of the Hidden Temple, the action-adventure ‘90s Nick game show turned the big 2-0.
The series pitted six teams of two contestants against each other in a three-round competition that took players through the depths of The Moat, down The Steps of Knowledge, and through the physically demanding Temple Games.
The last remaining team embarked on the intensely frightening Temple Run, which was filled with half-naked Temple Guards that threatened to jump out and snatch you right out of the game at any moment. Dee Bradley Baker, the booming voice behind the show’s iconic talking rock, Olmec, revealed in a recent interview how terrifying the Guards truly were in person.
“…. To have a masked, mostly naked adult attacking you while you’re in this panic mode to begin with is pretty scary,” Baker explained to Buzzfeed. “For some kids, it wasn’t a big deal, but for others, it would really just scare the crap out of them, which is fun to watch.”
But not to worry – the crisis of encountering one of these Mayan kidnappers could be averted if you had one of the all-important Pendants of Life. Teams who completed the Temple Run in less than three minutes won a fabulous grand prize, which – if you were lucky – was a trip to space camp.
So on this Throwback Thursday, here’s to all the Green Monkeys and Purple Parrots who survived the Temple Guards and somehow solved the infamously impossible Shrine of the Silver Monkey to give all of us 20-somethings a reason to laugh and reminisce two decades years later.
