Last night’s episode of Game of Thrones was one of the most intense and plot twisting episodes of all time. Firmly planting itself atop my list of all-time greatest television shows, the series continues to deliver drama that no other show can. Whereas most shows skate by with formulaic who-killed-who scenarios, Game of Thrones ignores any sort of established model and creates plot twists never before seen on television. Except maybe The Wire, no show is able to kill off major characters as often as GoT. Since many people are still catching up, I will not give away who was murdered in “The Rains of Castemere” last night but suffice it to say, the North takes a heavy hit and weddings don’t always need to be white. With that in mind, today’s blog will be about other shocking TV deaths…
BEWARE OF SPOILERS: If you are still planning to binge watch The Wire, Dexter, Game of Thrones, and Seinfeld you may wish to skip the below article.
HBO’s The Wire is another show that never shied away from killing off its main chracters. While the list is somewhat endless, Omar Little’s offing was the most surprising because of its sheer randomness. Sure, we all expected him to die, but no one anticipated it would come from a bullet to the back of the head by some unknown teenager. Omar was invincible for five seasons but could not survive a punk teenager in a grocery store? Are you serious? But if you watched the show you would know, “The game’s out there, and it’s play or get played. That simple. ”
Next on the list is from our friendly neighborhood serial killer show Dexter. Whereas bombshells like the death of Sergeant Doakes and Lieutenant LaGuerta were shocking, no one saw the death of his wife Rita coming. After finally killing Trinity (John Lithgow) in Season 4, Dexter calls his wife expecting to hear her voice far away with her children on vacation. Quickly he realizes, though, that her phone is ringing in his house. He enters finds her having bled to death in the bathtub (at the hands of Trinity) and his own son sitting and crying in a pool of blood. Talk about a gruesome death!
Turning to a slightly more comedic character offing, the death of Susan Biddle Ross (Heidi Swedberg) in Seinfeld was one of the most hilariously ways to kill off a character. Too cheap to buy expensive envelopes for their wedding, George buys bargain basement envelopes laced with toxic glue. After licking too many of the hazardous packets, Susan drops dead. As a result, George does not have to go through with a wedding and thanks to a bet Jerry gets stuck trying to wiggle his way out of a marriage. For a show about nothing, that was really something brilliant.
It is impossible to talk TV deaths without returning to Season 1 of Game of Thrones., long before anyone even started talking about dragons or red weddings, Eddard Stark (Sean Bean) was face of the show. He was loyal, he was strong, and he represented all things good. But just as we would never have predicted Amanda Bynes’ decline, Eddard Stark’s downfall was both awe inducing and quick. Three episodes before the finale, the new king decides the best way to “show him mercy” is to cut off his head. I guess Amanda was right, though, because “I think jeans look good on everyone; they are just plain sexy to me…those are my thoughts on jeans.”
