With the end of one awards show season comes the beginning of a new one. As March sets in and the hype of red carpet styles and best director snubs fades, teams of individuals begin their prospectus for the 2014 awards show year. As the Grammys begin their predictions for the next Fun., and the Globes begin their search for ways to improve on last year’s Poehler-Fey one-two punch, we here at the People’s Choice Awards begin the task of evaluating trends across all of entertainment. As you know, unlike any other awards show, we consider all forms of pop culture equally as important. While the Academy might only love film, the Emmys TV, and the Grammys Music, the PCA team loves them all.
So what does that mean for the PCA crew? Well, it means a lot of TV watching, a lot of music listening, a lot of trips to the cinema, and a whole lot of statistical analysis. What you may not realize when you type in peopleschoice.com is that we have you in mind. Sure, we may want to do an entire week devoted to the voice of Samantha Barks (Éponine from Les Misérables), but we know that you care more about the impending album wars between Beyoncé, Justin Timberlake, and Mariah Carey. As such, we will create content to gauge your opinions on these artists through various polls. By the fall, we combine this data along with statistics from other media sources including Nielsen Soundscan and Billboard.com and we begin the arduous nomination process for PCA 2014.
That being said, we are only in March and the latest and greatest albums have yet to be released. So as we wait for The Black Keys and Lady Gaga to drop their competing tracks, it is up to the team here to begin our predictions for the other genres in entertainment. Last week, a colleague of mine gave her opinion on the slew of pilots that are being developed this season, and today, I will focus on some of the artists who I think will be the favorites for this year. Here are my top 3:
3. Kendrick Lamar
The hip-hop star had a breakout year in 2012 and I only see his stock rising in 2013. His album, good kid, m.A.A.d city was met with critical acclaim and featured artists including Drake and legendary producer Dr. Dre. Though his collaboration with Lady Gaga failed because of “artistic differences,” his album debuted at number two on the US Billboard 200 chart, with first-week sales of 242,000 copies. Moreover, he went on to appear alongside Adam Levine and The Lonely Island for an SNL Digital Short, and got my vote of confidence when he appeared in GQ. I have a feeling we will see some big names attached to Mr. Lamar in 2013 and I am prepped to watch twitter go a-flurry as he drops new singles over the summer. Get ready, guys, he is about to drop some more “poetic justice” on us.
Best known for his hit songs “Best I Ever Had” and “Fancy’” featuring T.I. & Swizz Beatz, the hip-hop/ R&B star has been quietly making a comeback to the mainstream. In 2012, he collaborated with up-and-coming artists A$ap Rocky, 2 Chainz, and The Weeknd and released the first single off his latest album, Nothing Was the Same, on February 1st. Maybe I am a little biased because he’s also Jewish and I love a good Hava Nagilah rap, but from the music forums I frequent, a lot of people are predicting a huge return to fame. Behatzlacha Aubrey Drake Graham.
3. Lady Gaga
No surprise here. Gaga was all but invisible in 2012, which can only mean that she was priming for a huge return in 2013. Her new album Artpop does not have a confirmed release date but, if I were a betting man, I would say a few singles will be dropped in September when she makes her film debut in Robert Rodriguez’s Machete Kills. Gaga, as we know, loves to go big, so be ready for some outrageous stunts over the summer. And for you KatyCats out there, I hope you are ready to defend the thrown because you are sure to have some competition from the Little Monsters this year.
So there are my music predictions for 2013. Feel free to use the comment section below to post your list of highly anticipated releases in 2013. I look forward to reading them. For today’s poll, tell us which of these artists you think will have the biggest year in 2013:
