Let’s Hit the Slopes!

41What a great Christmas! It was my daughter’s first, it snowed on Christmas Eve, and the traffic was manageable… what more can you ask for? Though I gave warning to family and friends that we live in a small apartment in Brooklyn, the grandparents couldn’t resist themselves and presented my daughter with toys-a-plenty, including a scooter/bike/truck for her to use, come 2015. After all, she’s only 4 months old so we have some motor skills to develop before she can straddle that Harley, but it was wonderful and we have the photos to prove it. But I’m ready to move on to what’s next… New Year’s Eve, the People’s Choice Awards and most importantly, snowboard season! Now, Hollywood hasn’t exactly embraced snowboarding yet, so I am hard-pressed to give you a list of my favorite snowboard scenes from the silver screen. But I can give you my top 3 scenes from movies that take place on a snow-covered mountain…

Considering Dumb and Dumber is one of my all time favorite movies, it’s no surprise the infamous ski scene from Aspen, Colorado is on the list. When Harry (Jeff Daniels) gets dressed up in his ski suit and fur boots and heads off to the mountain with Mary (Lauren Holly), I find myself laughing the whole time. First of all, not only is he wearing a hot-pink racing suit, but he is also wearing a state-of-the-art racing helmet, making him look like something out of a science-fiction movie when he barges into the ski lodge, skis on and all. But his outfit doesn’t get him far, as on the his first chair-lift ride, he proceeds to lick the frost on the bar and get stuck for what must be several hours. Mary eventually pries his tongue off (ouch) and a snowball fight ensues (again, ouch) all while Lloyd (Jim Carrey) waits patiently back at the lodge for his date with Mary, which will never come. “Look, frost!”

Next comes the ski scene from Better Off Dead. Lane (John Cusack) is challenged to a race by a rival skier. When debating whether or not to accept, he is forced to enter the race when the local paper boy who has been menacingly trying to collect his $2 delivery fee throughout the whole movie, finds him on the mountain. The boy, on a bike fitted with skies, chases Lane down the mountain – on one ski, mind you – perpetually chanting “I want my $2!” The boy inadvertently helps Lane to win the race and get the girl, and make me laugh.

Finally, to round out my list, I’ve selected a non-comedic scene featuring Roger Moore as 007. This scene from 1985′s A View to a Kill, does in fact feature snowboarding as James Bond’s escape vehicle of choice. Having had his snow mobile blown up, Bond takes the broken front blade off the damaged machine and shoots down the mountain, outrunning the bad guys behind him on skis. How cool of the Bond team to recognize the hipness that is snowboarding way back in 1985 and to use it as a method of escape for our beloved agent.

Well I don’t know about you guys, but I’m super psyched to go hit the mountains! Now, go down to the basement, dust off your skis and snowboards and tell us which of these movies with a classic ski/snowboard scene is your favorite.
