Adele: Tear Inducingly Good

As my colleague iterated on Friday, this week we will discuss the nominees for Favorite Pop Artist. P!nk was the topic of conversation on Friday, and today, I am honored to discuss the soulful and amazingly gifted singer, Adele. Her powerful voice has captured the hearts of millions since her breakout 2008 album 19, and her multi-award winning album 21 launched her into superstardom in 2011, engraving her into my heart forever.

Born Adele Laurie Blue Adkins, and raised by a single mother, Adele is best known for her soulful voice, and emotional lyrics, often about lost love. Her self proclaimed influences came from the voices of Aaliyah, Destiny’s Child, Mary J. Blige, and fellow nominee, P!nk. In fact, in an interview with Socialite magazine in 2010, Adele stated that one of her most defining moments as a child came from listening to P!nk’s Missundazstood album. “I had never heard, being in the room, someone sing like that live [...] I remember sort of feeling like I was in a wind tunnel, her voice just hitting me. It was incredible.” While Adele must realize how great her own voice is, I wonder if she knows that her sound does the same to so many people today as P!nk’s had once  done for her.

My first exposure to Adele came well after the release of her first album, and was shown to me by none other than my younger brother, a (closet) die-hard Adele fan. I had recently gotten out of a tumultuous relationship when my brother emailed me “Someone Like You,” and I couldn’t help but shed a few tears.  While I am not one to believe in a good cry, no song since “Somebody to Love” by Queen had spoken to me as deeply, and induced a more liberating cry. There was something about her voice that made me feel like the only way to express myself was to grab a box of Puffs and ball my eyes out. (PS: I would like to take this moment to apologize to my roommates – I’m pretty sure the song was cranked up to 11 for a solid 20 minutes).

While this moment felt unique to me, I only later found out that many of my friends – both male and female – shared a similar moment while listening to her belt out those now famous lyrics “Never mind, I’ll find someone like you…”and that, to me, is what makes Adele so special. A great musician can touch her audience with one simple line, and make even the “toughest” of grown men cry.  Whether or not you’re an avid Adele fan, you have to respect her talents. In such a short time – she is only 24 – Adele has become one of the most memorable and award winning artists of all time.

To date, Adele has won 8 Grammy awards, 12 Billboard Music Awards, 4 Brit Awards, and has been nominated for 6 People’s Choice Awards. Her second album broke the record for the longest number-1 album in Billboard history by a woman, and as of last week, joined the rare list of 21 records that has sold over 10 million copies in the US since 1991. The list includes the likes of Whitney Houston, The Beatles, and Bob Marley, to name a few.

While it may be too early to tell what will come of the British sensation in 2013, the forecast is looking pretty sunny – or rainy if the raindrops are tears- with the success of her latest single, Skyfall” and the succumbing of James Bond himself to the group of Adele induced criers. Feel free to use the comments section below to tell us your first experience hearing Adele, and don’t forget to vote in today’s featured poll.
