The most famous Bueller quote of them all. The one about how quickly life moves and how easy it is to be distracted. We know it by heart, we love how it sounds, but do we ever really stop and appreciate its meaning? Summer started this weekend and it will be gone in the blink of an eye. Whether you’re reading this blog from the comfort of your home or the cramped space you call your desk, take a moment and think about what you can do to make this summer last. Plan a trip. Buy a bike. Swim a lake. TURN OFF THE DVR. Do anything to avoid the rut that is so easy to fall into. I know NewsRoom will be hard to miss, and Breaking Bad even harder, but I promise you they aren’t going anywhere. There aren’t 500 days of summer. There are 90 days left, so what are you waiting for? If you already have plans for the next few weeks you can stop reading, but if not, here are a few ideas to get your summer started.
Summer Concert Series
In a previous blog I listed the top outdoor concerts this summer but failed to mention the multitude of free outdoor music shows. If you are a New Yorker, you already know about the summer concerts in Central Park featuring artists like Lady Gaga, LMFAO, and The Black Eyed Peas; but did you know about the concert series in Park Slope? The first concert of the season was Saturday and you probably missed it. Ghostface Killah came out and it was one heck of a show. The concerts are almost every week and as long as you get there early, you will not have any problems getting in. I can’t speak for the rest of the country, but I doubt that New York is the only place to host free music. So stop thinking so hard about what to put on your list and write this down: Find free outdoor concerts in __(your city), buy a blanket for a picnic, get off the couch and let your ears bleed rock and roll.
We did them in college, we’ve seen them in movies but how often do we just pack our bags and go for long drives? I for one have only gone on two real road trips, so this summer will be my time to explore. I may not be going to visit JWOWW and Snooki but if fist pumping and GTLing is your thing than what are you waiting for? Hit the Jersey Shore, Your December tan looks normal now, I promise. For me, I’m off to Dublin, Georgia, for the Summer Redneck Games cause as a native New Yorker I don’t think I will ever find hubcap hurling, mud-pit belly flop contests, or toilet seat tosses near me, so it’s time to go.
Run, Forrest, Run
You knew it was coming. You didn’t want me to mention it, but I did. Summer is about exercise and it is time to achieve those goals. Whether you’re doing a Tough Mudder, a half marathon, or mustering up the strength to jog around the block, it’s time to kick the bad habits and hit the pavement. Summer is the time for playing outside, running on the trails, and exploring the world. So get off the computer and remember, the question isn’t “what are we going to do?” the question is “what aren’t we going to do?” Have a great summer!
