I was making my way home after work last night and ended up taking a seat on the R train next to a sweet old gentleman. He was wearing a sensible brown suit, an old-fashioned comb over and a grin so wide I knew he was happy to be on his way home. As the doors closed and we pulled out of the 49th St. station, the loud New York sounds faded and I was treated to perhaps my favorite time of day, when no one can reach me and I’m alone with my thoughts for a glorious 11 minutes.
However my precious silence was cut short, just as quickly as it came. As I leaned my head back and closed my eyes, I was jolted back to life by an unmistakable sound emanating from that sweet old man wearing a sensible brown suit — it was the voice of Ms. Carly Rae Jepson, singer of “Call Me Maybe,” who’s currently sitting pretty at the top of the Billboard charts. After a quadruple take, I realized my ears were not deceiving me and that sweet old gentleman with the old-fashioned comb over was actually grinning because he had America’s latest pop sensation blasting in his ears. I have to say I was more impressed than anything, considering I usually save my guilty pleasure tunes for a walk home on an empty street (paging One Direction)! But I digress.
Of course I knew we had a bona fide hit on our hands before the random subway listening sesh. Justin Bieber made a video first, and Katy Perry followed up with a version of her own. The Roots and Jimmy Fallon got in on the action last week and the Today Show even had a “Call Me Maybe”-off between two collegiate sports teams. But is it fair to say that “Call Me Maybe” is the song of the summer? Perhaps, but we can’t forget about the other behemoths hijacking the airwaves:
“Somebody That I Used To Know” by Gotye ft. Kimbra – By now Gotye’s massive hit has had a seat on the Billboard Hot 100 chart for 22 weeks. Not to mention it was covered by Glee, The Voice and American Idol, all within days of each other. The Australian singer was also invited to perform on SNL and even managed to sneak into a Digital Short of his own, not a small feat by any stretch of the imagination.
“We Are Young” by Fun. ft. Janelle Monae– Oh Fun. They have an unnecessary period at the end of their name just for the FUN of it! The boys from NYC currently sit at #4 on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart, with performances on Conan, the MTV Movie Awards and the Coachella Music Festival under their belts. Don’t worry – they got the Glee treatment as well.
“What Makes You Beautiful” by One Direction – the aforementioned boy band has taken the world by storm. They’re cute, they dress alike and they have adorable accents. They come from humble beginnings, have legions of screaming fans and are directly responsible for making me take the long way home. Did I mention they were covered on Glee?
