A scare in the rain

On a cold rainy night when there is nothing to do, is it not the perfect setting to walk down the streets of New York in search of a night that you will never forget? Having avoided it for a few weeks, I left my apartment and walked through the rain searching for one thing – The Cabin in the Woods. I cannot explain why, but for whatever reason I decided to go alone. I pushed past the hustling few left in the rain, bought my ticket, and navigated the cold dark hallways that every movie theater seem to only have when its raining. I took my seat and for a moment I was actually scared. As more people piled in, and the eeriness dissipated, a question took hold of me – What is it about a scary movie that would make me sit in a cold freezing room totally drenched?

While I cant say I am a huge horror fan, movies are what I love, and the feeling of jumping out of your seat is indescribable. To me, a great scary movie needs a realistic plot, innocent characters, and most importantly a great twist. But you know what? Sometimes you just want to see celebrities in outfits three times too small get trapped in totally ridiculous situations. Anyone ever see the movie Thirteen Ghosts? That being said, I thought it might be interesting to list a few iconic scary movies to see whether or not you would do as I did, and wander the streets in the pouring rain in search of nothing more than a scream. At the end, I leave it you the people to decide which one is your favorite and invite you to write a few comments. Lets begin.

Scream

Here is a movie that I wish I could see fresh every time. Scream is the benchmark for what a great horror movie should be. While of course this was not the first slasher film, Scream brought to life every mothers worst fear of leaving their child home alone. It took innocent high school students (Drew Barrymore, Neve Campbell, Mathew Lillard), put them in a normal setting, and threw out the notion that the killer could never be one of your best friends. Is it really worth that puddle in your shoe? I think so.

Paranormal Activity

Oh so you are moving into a nice quiet neighborhood with your wife and child? Everything is perfect right? Think again. Though I cant say this was one of my favorites, since the only ghost I really think of is Patrick Swayze learning how to push pennies with a homeless man in the subway, I can totally see why people are willing to stand out in the pouring rain for this one.

Saw

Now here is a movie that makes us think twice about what would happen if someone decided to account for all the things that we thought no one ever saw. It took people who committed immoral acts and gave them the choice of either dying for their crimes or taking enough pain as punishment. As we all know, what made this movie unforgettable was the final twist…the killer was in the room the whole time.

The Cabin in the Woods

Since it is still in theaters I wont go into any details, suffice it to say that it was worth probably getting pneumonia.

Now it’s your turn, which of these iconic scary movies would you be willing to brave the rain for?

The Cabin in the Woods

Paranormal Activity

Saw

Scream
