Did Oscar get it right? Do you agree with yesterday’s nominations? Nor is there any doubt that the Meryl vs. Viola race seems to be THE question on everyone’s mind. How could it not be?
But what of Oscar’s snubs? We asked yesterday about the most shocking “oversights” and everyone seems to agree that Leo DiCaprio was the most egregious. So now let’s consider why voters acted as they did. Little Devil’s Advocate stuff here. Regards Leo… I have to ask (and I enjoyed J.Edgar and thought he did an awesome job) – was he really the right guy for the role? I think he’s sensational, although I also feel that when he plays someone who’s really old, they better darn well get that makeup right. Which they did not. And do something magical with the audio, so that he doesn’t sound like a boyish movie star in his prime. Tough to say that effects matter, but they certainly play a role. And I have to say Leo may have picked the wrong role – he’s just too young.
No Bridesmaids for Best Picture…also not that surprising to me. Much as I adored it (and I did, along with everyone else I’ve ever met) the thing is still, in some respects, a raunchy comedy. Just like The Hangover. Much as I would have like to have seen it up there, something tells me Oscar voters decided that they wanted to get more serious this year. After all, when you’re dealing with nine films that are all pretty serious, to do with 1) war, 2) hijacking, 3) professional sports, 4) racial inequality, 5) infidelity, 6)20th century literary giants, 7) life in black & white, and um, 9) our existentialist quest for meaning (I think) – it’s tough to see a silly, fun, raucous comedy in there. No matter how glorious it may be.
Why didn’t Tilda Swinton get nominated? No idea, except that Glenn Close is probably a better campaigner. She’s certainly more well-known. All we know about Tilda is that she is absolutely striking, impossibly talented, and not one if those actors who takes advantage of every PR opportunity. My guess is that Glenn Close – nominated five times but never a winner – is super familiar to voters, who realized that Albert Nobbs was a serious labor of love. Let’s face it – it’s not a film everyone’s going to run out and see. Voters also know that no one but Meryl or Viola will win so, why not toss Glenn a bone? Besides, Tilda Swinton’s film, while obviously beautifully done, may be too touchy a subject still. That, and she already has an Oscar.
Not sure why Albert Brooks got snubbed – and didn’t see Drive – although I’m told it’s a bit violent so perhaps this turned voters off (not that it stopped them from going with Rooney Mara). Why the very, very good kid from The Descendants Shailene Woodley got passed over is anyone’s guess. Maybe voters think she’s young and will have plenty more chances to shine. Maybe they know Octavia Spencer will walk away with it so they focused on other things.

i loved hugo, but 50/50 and the Big Year are my snubs.
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo was the best movie I’ve seen in years. In fact, I went to it twice and would probably go again. I also think Mara Rooney gave the best performance of any female actress I’ve seen in years! She should be the winner of every award — especially the Acadamy Award!!
50/50 is great movie ,at least it should be nominated for screenplay. and I think we have to say :why Johnny Depp isn’t nominated for Hugo’s producer .he is one of the main producer .tree of life has four ,why Hugo has just two producers.

50/50 was the best movie of the year. It made me laugh hysterically and then cry like a baby. It should’ve been nominated for best picture and the extremely talented Joseph Gordon-Levitt should definitely have been nominated for best actor!
I’m tired of some people bashing Close’s performance. Have they SEEN IT? Do they GET IT? Probably not. It’s a masterful performance that’s true acting at its finest. If some people think it’s boring, plain, simplistic, or whatever, they’re not thinking deep enough. She made it look easy, but pulling off the nuances and delicate touches that she did takes perfection.
I do agree that Swinton should’ve been nominated though, but NOT over Close. Are people just getting closed–minded or too superficial or what? It’s not always about the big stuff… Sometimes the finer, quieter details in life make a HUGE difference.
I’m curious as to why the IN logo was so prominently shown at the beginning of Hugo, and Johnny’s name was in the credits at the end as one of the producers, yet he’s never mentioned in any of these award nominations–the only two ever mentioned are Scorcese and King.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences determined Friday that it will officially credit four producers, instead of three, for “The Tree of Life.” so where is Johnny Depp for Hugo ‘s producer .his company ‘s logo is after GK .what’s the hell. why they didn’t say any thing? he should be nominated .

Harry Potter should have been nominated! It was every bit as good, if not better, than Lord of The Rings Trilogy. Not only did all the characters grow with their parts, but the screenplays were true to the story and look at all the notable British co-stars: Maggie Smith, Richard Harris, Emma Thompson, Gary Oldman, Ralph Finnes, Julie Walter….Also what happened to Steven Spielberg’s Adventures of Tin Tin in best animated film?

I agree that Michael Fassbender should have definitely been nominated for best actor and Carrie Mulligan for best supporting actress. I thought actors whose performance touch you get nominated. I don’t know why Brad Pitt was nominated and I’m even his fan. While I also love Leo, I felt like I was just watching Leo play dress up with makeup and acting like Hoover. I certainly hope that War Horse wins best picture because that was the only film that stirred viewers feelings and is a memorable movie that is also destined to become a classic. The only thing good about this year’s Oscars is that Billy Crystal is hosting again!

Actorwise: SHAME actors Michael (breakthrough year of the century) Fassbender should have been nominated and so should Carrie Mulligan for supporting. Brave, disturbing film with great acting.
The Ides of March. I think Ryan Gosling should have gotten a nominationg for this movie or at least one of the movies he has made this year.
ATTENTION PEOPLE MAG! As a long time member of your magazine I was disappointed that you did NOT make Ryan Gosling the SEXIEST MAN ALIVE. I hope you have better judgment this year and give him that title. He is by far the sexiest man around, not just in the movies but in his real life.
