Flicks: Beauty/Beast, Streep/Thatcher & Dolly/Latifah

Who’s up for a long weekend and catching the Golden Globes on Sunday?

Now that awards season has officially begun, and now that some of the smoke has cleared, it’s time to talk movies. Since it is still awards season, however, two things are happening. One, nobody releases any super big-deal dramas (that might be contenders, because it doesn’t matter) and thus we get lots of things like horror. In this case, we have a slasher musical opening which is a great example. That’s right…I said slasher musical. The other thing that happens is a lot of great movies with teensy little releases (in order to qualify for awards consideration) are now spreading wide and so more people can watch them.

That’s exactly what’s happened with The Iron Lady, Meryl Streep’s latest masterpiece. Which everyone should see. Because she’s that amazing. I’m also becoming increasingly over people quibbling about the “plot”. Now I’d never say that a movie’s plot isn’t or shouldn’t be super important, but really…when you’re talking about a biopic starring Meryl Streep, is the plot really ultra-central? I don’t think so. Nor is this story about a specific scandal, or who won what war because of a dirty trick. Rather, the story is about a period in the life of England’s first lady Prime Minister. Isn’t that plot enough??  It’s based on a person whom lots of people remember, not a notorious character. This is not Iron Lady With The Dragon Tattoo.

Also opening this weekend in theaters is Joyful Noise. Here we get what essentially looks like a Glee-type movie, starring two fabulous divas, Queen Latifah and Dolly Parton. It’s not getting the best word-of-mouth, but who cares? I believe this one’ll be a sumptuous feel-good style spectacle and I also think that it’ll be extremely popular particularly given the dearth of feel-good entertainment out there. I’ll definitely catch this.

If you want a super-safe bet, as in so safe you know how popular it will be because you saw it years ago, there’s Beauty and the Beast, rereleased in 3D. Here again we have something that fans will likely attend in droves, plus you get the kids who never saw it to begin with – which should equal smashing box office numbers.

In the neither joyful nor feel good nor horror category we have Contraband, starring Mark Wahlberg as a smuggler who’s trying to protect his brother from bad guys. This will be popular among young men and anyone else who loves a good old fashioned-crime-drama about drug smuggling. This one also boasts rather an impressive cast, with Kate Beckinsale and Giovanni Ribisi along for what may be a bumpy and violent ride.

And finally, my personal favorite (in terms of genre – I won’t actually see it because it looks way too scary) we have Don’t Go In The Woods, which is actually being billed as a slasher musical. This one was directed by TV mainstay Vincent D’Onofrio and it’s about an indie rock band who heads out to parts unknown in order to record a new album in peace and quiet. Unfortunately of course, they aren’t exactly alone. Gotta give D’Onofrio props for working with this conceit to begin with and it will, I am certain, attract a certain underground but rabid fanbase from the getgo. For the kitsch factor alone.

That’s what’s out there thiscoming long weekend. With MLK Jr. Day on  Monday, you have plenty of time to check out all manner of flicks. Plus the Golden Globes are this Sunday night, so that should make for some fun viewing. Especially with Ricky Gervais. I predict the guy from The Artist wins, plus Viola Davis too, and The Descendants should fare nicely as well. As always, let us know what you see and what you thought.

Today’s poll:

Which of these movies are you most likely to catch this weekend?

1)   Contraband

2)   The Iron Lady

3)   Joyful Noise

4)   Beauty and the Beast

Supernatural wins the most important PCA TV Award for Best Network Drama and the two leading actors don’t even get invited to accept the award!
    It’s an utter disgrace!

There are fans world- wide, myself included, who voted for the show, hoping it would win! It did, but the win gets brushed under the carpet because obviously the wrong show won in Hollywood’s opinion.

If it had been any other show the protagonists would have been invited.
Supernatural is always ignored by the “powers that be” and this is only the most recent example.
You should all be ashamed of yourselves!

Trying to run away by making another blog? Not A chance. We more stubborn than hell hounds.

    BE PROFESSIONAL!

  4. Mika says:

Well this is what I *hope* to see from the Golden Globes…that they RESPECT all of the winners and announce them during the live show!!

Unlike the “People’s” Choice Awards who pick and choose what winners THEY choose to show during the live broadcast. Yes I’m talking about the Supernatural snub. Very immature to ignore the thousands of complaints posted on PCA’s websites calling for an apology to the actors/crew/fandom.

Pretending that you don’t see the comments and even deleting them will not make the problem you created go away. Please, do the right thing and give Supernatural the recognition, a real one, that it deserves.

  5. Scyllaya says:

Just because we are ignored we won’t stop with our complains.

PCA’s/CBS’s behavior was unprofessional, rude and outrageous!

We demand a public apology. Pretending we are not complaining will not make this go away.

Maybe you big shot TV people did not realize it yet, but it’s the sci-fi/fantasy nerds that are the core of anything that’s television!

WE are the ones who watch most television, we are the ones buying countless products, we are the ones who vote online, send mail, support.

Do you honestly think that your casual viewers who are nothing but numbers are the consumers? WRONG!

We are! And we are insulted from the way we were treated.

(Just another Supernatural and sci-fi/fantasy fan)

  6. Paula says:

I thought the PCA was about what the people liked. People like Supernatural. I think it’s time to show how much you respect people and apologize for not inviting the crew and cast and for trying to sweep the show under the rug.

  7. Sarah says:

This weekend I will so watch SUPERNATURAL. Because I´m an oversea fan, too, I have to wait til Saturday morning. Then the show is online. Yes, I mean the little show you totally ignored a few days ago. Well, bad choice, wrong fandom to mess with. Do you really think you get an answer to your ridiculous poll questions? Apologize! Shame on you PCA! We will not forget. Next year we will nominate them again and J.Ackles and/or J. Padalecki for best drama actor. Then we make them win again. You don´t know what you have done.

  8. Emiko says:

Hmmm. Looks like when “People’s” Choice Awards doesn’t like who the “People” vote for, the “People’s” choice gets swept under the rug. Shame on you! The idea that there is not enough time to air the winner of a MAJOR category, Favorite Network Drama, is ABSURD! You can’t convince millions of Supernatural fans that if Grey’s Anatomy, The Good Wife or House had won there would not have been enough time to air the presentation to one of those shows. We all know that there is always room for a “mainstream” winner. The winner of five awards never bothered to show up, present those awards off air. And shame on you for not even inviting the cast of the winner of TWO awards. Shame on the “People’s” Choice Awards for insulting the “People”.

  9. Jasmine says:

All fans of SUPERNATURAL are soooo disappointed by this behavior of yours. Im km s away from your country, an overseas fan of this show. There are thousands of people that you keep ignoring all of the world, not only in USA. SUPERNATURAL is the best!! you really should be ashamed of yourselves!!! they are people’s choice, arent they?? They won 2 categories but u think they are not worth it?????? you are not fair…Supernatural cast deserve an immediate apology!

  10. Platon says:

Supernatural is the best sci-fi show ever .!! It is internationally recognised and famous and have the support from people all over the world.. I live in greece and everyone here watch supernatural.!! you should be ashamed of yourselves.!!Next time try to remember sending an invitation to spn crew.!!

  11. scspn says:

The way you treated Supernatural was completely and unbelievibly unfair. Just because Supernatural is not as a high profile show as others that were nominated in the same catigories does not mean that they do not deserve the to have it presented on stage and if not onstage then show the clip of it being presented during the show. It just goes to show how shallow and ignorant the people at People’s Choice Awards are!!! It is called the People’s choice awards for a reason because this is where fans get to vote. Just because Supernatural has fans devoted to the show that voted to get their show on the PCA doesnt mean you have the right to only display them getting their awards ONLINE and nothing during the show. I am completely discusted with the way you have treated the Supernatural cast crew and fans. To not even invite anyone from the show to the awards show is also disgusting and unreprehensible! They deserve to be there just as much as any other person from the industry. All of you at Peoples Choice Awards have disgraced the name of your show by allowing it to be based on your own personal approval of shows. You can no longer be known as the Peoples Choice Awards but only as the Money Hungry, Unfair, Disgusting Excutives of the Business Choice Awards

  12. Tracy says:

I don’t understand why you didn’t invite the cast of Supernatural. Because you didn’t think they would win? Or because it’s not as “popular” as House, Grey’s Anatomy, or Vampire Diaries? Well it’s quite pathetic. I mean it’s one thing for them not being able to go, because of filming, but the fact that you didn’t even invite them is really infuriating. And I don’t even understand how ‘Favorite Network TV Drama’ wasn’t even included in the award show. I mean that’s one of the main categories of the show. I hope you all understand how disappointed us Supernatural fans are. Jared, Jensen, and the whole cast and crew of Supernatural work so hard and they’re getting the chance to be recognized for it, but you don’t even really include it in the show, let alone invite the cast. Supernatural really deserves a public apology for this.

  13. Alayna says:

This is ridiculous, I woke up this morning and hit this website first thing hoping to see an apology. But here you go ignoring it. You have no idea how big of a mistake you have made with not only pushing our choice of Supernatural to the side, but blatantly ignoring our pleas. You either need to listen to the PEOPLE of CHANGE YOUR NAME. It’s unbelievable that you have no apology. The cast and crew worked so hard for seven years. It’s a brilliant show that has a nearly cult-like fandom. I will repeat what has been said many times before: Do Not Mess With This Fandom.

  14. jo says:

so you act like nothing happened?? why don`t you even clear things up? i mean if you don`t think SUPERNATURAL cast deserve an apologize for not being invited even though they won 2 categories… al least present your excuse or something!!!
DON`T IGNORE US!!! that`s rude and pathetic,

but yeah…you think we can FORGET it but we WON`T!!!
and i`m not gonna get tired until you say something about it!!

  15. Stephanie says:

Why isn’t this post the apology we have been demanding for? Is it really too much to ask for CBS to admit that they were wrong not to invite not just the nominees of two categories, but the winners?

Shake my head, consider me a lost customer for any of your future endeavors.

  16. Esther says:

    Cont.
… the rug and act like nothing happened! You should be ashamed of yourselves and stop being so damn arrogant! Asking for our feedback about the show and then dismissing our comments is just adding salt to an open wound! We are the “People” of the “People’s Choice Awards” and we are disgusted by your reprehensible behavior!

  17. Esther says:

I gave up reading this stupid blog when the total b*tch that is Liz Warner publicly insulted Miranda Lambert and then didn’t apologize publicly for her inflammatory remarks, even though the fans demanded one! And, now after millions of PCA members and voters have asked for a public apology for being inconsiderate, insulting and dismissive to the casts of “Supernatural” & “Castle”, you once again ignore us and try to sweep yor failure under
