The Many Faces of Johnny Depp: Which Role’s Your Favorite?

By the time you read this post, the Golden Globe Awards nominations will have been announced…more on them tomorrow, but first, let us know – do you watch the Globes? Do they make you want to go and see certain movies? Do you think they’re a powerful indicator of the Oscars? Let us know where you stand on the Globes…no matter who got nominated (or snubbed) today.

What we do know however, is that you’re definitely PCA fans. So much so in fact that if you voted you’ve already made a statement that will have bearing on these races. With the show thiscoming January 11th and all. Like our next Favorite Movie Actor nominee for example, to whom we now return having already discussed the first two contenders.

Who doesn’t like Johnny Depp? He follows Hugh Jackman and Daniel Radliffe, and is curiously the only US-born nominee of our Favorite Movie Actors.

He’s an actor who manages – in spite of his massive popularity – to fly under the radar and keep to himself. We do know that he owns an island, plays music in a band, and has two children with his partner, French actress Vanessa Paradis. Beyond that, he’s a cypher and never seems to be involved in Hollywood scandal. He’s one of those actor’s actors who now has an almost “distinguished” feel because he’s done so much – even though he’s only 48.

Johnny’s been nominated for thirteen People’s Choice Awards – and he’s won six. Not a bad record.

He’s also a chameleon – both stylistically and professionally;  Depp has led many cinematic lives, he’s gone from hunky bad boy to serious actor to goofball to chidren’s icon to literary fave and back again. I first noticed him in 21 Jump Street, the TV show (that’s about to be released as a major movie with Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill in which Depp will appear) and even then there was something about those cheekbones that viewers couldn’t get enough of – ever.

In fact, there are several Depps people love – the cult fave/Tim Burton dudes: Sweeney Todd, Edward Scissorhands, Ichabod Crane, Mad Hatter and Willy Wonka, for example. Others like the quirky but human humans: Ed Wood, Gilbert Grape, Sir James Barrie (Finding Neverland) and Frank the math teacher  (The Tourist).  I was a big fan of Donnie Brasco and Public Enemies – both of which perhaps should have earned more recognition than either did. But of course, Depp probably gained his biggest fame, and largest audiences playing the irascible Captain Jack Sparrow in The Pirates of the Caribbean movies – which are indeed delightful.

Above all, Depp is a consummate professional – and he can make things happen in Hollywood because of who he is.  His friendship with “Gonzo” journalist Hunter S. Thompson may be why Fear and Loathing saw the light of day – and it’s absolutely why The Rum Diary got made. But you also have to give some credit to a “serious” actor, who probably doesn’t have to work another day in his life if he choses not to, deliberately opting to make the Pirates movies because he thinks “they’re fun” and because he  “loves kids”. Or the wacky  collaborations with Tim Burton, which sometimes feel more like two guys having a blast imagining fabulous new worlds, rather than filmmaker and actor getting down to business. Without giving too much thought to commercial success.

I guess what I mean is that Johnny Depp has always kept us guessing, and will always keep us guessing. Nor does he look to be slowing down. Why would you when everything you do looks like so much fun?

Today’s poll:

Let us know which of these Johnny Depp movies is your favorite:

1)    Pirates of the Caribbean (all 4)

2)    Edward Scissorhands

3)    Sweeney Todd

4)    Rango

Firstly, I vote for Captain Jack Sparrow from Pirates of the Caribbean franchise.. And then Edward from Edward Schissorhands..
BTW, Edward Scissorhands made me cry.. :’)

Now I’vew seen “Libertine” and “Dark Shadows” and “Rum Diary”. I thought Rum Diary was very funny and thought Depp looked extremely young and handsome.

Dark Shadows was very entertaining with all of the droll one liners and the action was scary. His co-stars were outstanding and it was well worth the price of a movie ticket.

Libertine was uncomfortable, just because of the subject matter, but Depp was magnificant and totally underated in that movie. He played his part to perfection; you hated and loved the character.

He deserves a career achievement Oscar if nothing else and he deserves a People’s choice because he’s earned 22 Billion dollars for his employers.

  6. I like all of Johnny Depp movies. Pirates are my favorite adventure movies, but Blow is my favorite “bad guy” movie. My 12 year old daughter loves him and my husband is liking him, too. He hits all the marks.

  7. Karojen says:

I have been facinated with Depp since Jump Street and still read everything there is to read about him and see all of his movies.

I loved him as Ichabod Crane, and I loved him in “From Hell”

I was knocked out of my seat at the first sight of Jack Sparrow and continue to love him.

I’d say the only characters I haven’t loved was in “Fear and Loathing” and I haven’t see “The Libertine”. There is a forever wait at Netflix for that one.

I think Depp is the best actor there is. So many great actors are always themselves in every movie. The are hits at the box office but they are basically themselves.

Johnny has the ability to transform himself into a magical character. He can be the criminal in “Blow” or a Buster Keaton wanna be in Benny and Joon, and he can be a crazy? Don Juan De Marco. I loved him in “The Man Who Cried”. He was a breath taking doomed gypsy. He stole Chocolat and his guitar playing divine.

I am impressed and happy when I read what a great family guy he is and see how gentle and caring he is with the kids who want his autograph. I don’t think he’s forgotten what it’s like to be poor. [like me] ha ha

I hate it that Johnny has never been awarded an Oscar and I think he is being ignored by the old Guarde and I hope he soon gets the recognition that he deserves.

No one has seen his performance in The Libertine because the film itself it so repulsive. But he is magnificent in a way I hadn’t seen before. Ed Wood is wonderful and so is his little role in Chocolat. The amazing thing is that it’s so difficult to choose because every part he plays is so distinct. I loved Sweeney Todd as well.

  9. Connie says:

I’ve been in love with Johnny Depp since I was about 9 years old, discovering him by watching reruns of 21 Jump Street. I’m 28 now and I’m still in love with him. To pick one is really not possible I love all of his work. He is the greatest actor of my generation (think roles like Libertine and Before Night Falls)I can’t wait to see him in Dark Shadows.

  10. Depp Lover says:

Never could I choose a fave. All his flicks are outstanding! I think he is the best actor in all of hollywood. As someone mentioned before, he is daring in playing many varied roles, and does an outstanding job with whatever he puts himself in!

  11. vito says:

You forgot Private Resort, lol, his 1985 film. Funny as hell !!!

  12. Gay says:

I love Johnny Depp. Always have. Always will. He is one of the greatest actors ever and I have enjoyed all of his movies. To have to pick one is not fair. His roles are varied and the fact that he would play some of the unusal ones shows his bravery. Above all, I believe he is one of the greatest people on the face of the earth when it comes to kindness, intelligence, humor, understanding human nature, etc. All the things that make a person great. No wonder he is either greatly loved or greatly disliked. But, for me, I love him.

  13. Marcela says:

The astronaute’s wife, that’s my favourite role, but Johnny Depp is the best actor in Hollywood. I like him in each of his roles,he’s just perfect.

  14. Kine says:

  15. Mary says:

I just love, love, love that boy!!!!

  16. amy smeltzer says:

I like Chocolat, Don Juan DeMarco and Benny & Joon

  17. light says:

he is the greatest actor in Hollywood. but he didn’t win Oscar yet, and this year he didn’t nominated in Golden Glob for pirate 4 or rum diary. why?

  18. DEE says:

Edward Scissorhands followed closely by all the Pirates movies.

  19. I loved The Pirate movies. Better yet, I love anything that Johnny Depp does. He is also the sexiest man alive along with Hugh Jackman. Johnny DEpp is number one in my book. I always look forward for one of his movies. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK. And his partner is a lucky woman.

  20. Pam says:

I liked the Secret Window, the best. Johnny looked the best in the movie Chocolat in my opinion. Very desirable. (although Don Juan DeMarco brings up a close second)
