Who watched last night’s CMA awards? What did you all think? Right out of the gate, I have to ask which you liked better, the show’s live performances, or the awards part? I was partial to the performances. Clearly the audience was too, although that’s probably inevitable when you broadcast a show from an arena only marginally smaller than the state of Delaware.
Despite the fact that I don’t know much about country music, just like everyone else who doesn’t know much about country music we now all know exactly who Blake Shelton is, on account of The Voice. He was certainly charming and unsurprisingly, a big winner. And the goofball graciousness is undeniably appealing.
Plus, you gotta hand it to the country music crowd for putting on a show that’s free of vulgarity/shock tactics, and for having the smarts to incorporate Modern Family’s Eric Stonestreet into musical numbers.
I enjoyed it, but I’m still flummoxed: why, when you win an award, do you still have to keep a cowboy hat on, whose enormous brim completely obscures your face during your acceptance speech? At the risk of sounding old-fashioned, would it be too much to see their eyes? Maybe that’s just me. Nor do I bring it up in the way that some people object to hats in church or restaurants – I couldn’t care less about that. But when they’re up there thanking their zillions of fans, the least they could do is let those fans catch the full mug. Right, Jason Aldean? Cowboy hats, while traditional, don’t do these guys any favors in the recognition department. I suspect some of them might even see even more crossover success if they were bare-headed, because you could tell more of them apart.
Fortunately, someone obviously told Blake Shelton that he needn’t wear another hat for the rest of his life – which was a very savvy move. Similarly, Keith Urban was advised against sporting a chapeau (or using a comb, for that matter) and he’s all the better, cuter, and more recognizable for it. Scotty McCreery, now belting it out alongside the big dogs, was far more appealing because we got to behold his neonatal visage entirely. The Band Perry was – and is – predictably adorable and I suspect we will be hearing lots more from them; that girl’s got pipes for days and here’s hoping they have the same two-dudes-and-a-gal staying power of Lady Antebellum, who apparently cannot walk down a street without winning something. The Glen Campbell tribute was beautifully handled.
All in all I was impressed, although I haven’t any idea why Lionel Richie was there, nor did I understand the positioning of the Jennifer Nettles / Matt Nathanson duet. The song was terrific, but I kept hoping they’d stop the weird guinea fowl mating ritual thing and turn to face us. Especially since neither had a hat on and both are easy on the eyes.
Maybe the Oscars – now that they have a brand new producer in old pro Brian Grazer – will take a page from the CMAs, who certainly know how to put on a big show and whip fans into a frenzy. Now, if they could just work on those hats.

I don’t really have anything against Taylor Swift; she seems like a great role model for young girls and also seems like she is a polite, kind young lady. However, musically I am not a fan. I cannot understand how she wins country music awards when her music is not country anymore. The ability to play a guitar does not make you a country star. Katy Perry plays guitar and she isn’t winning country awards. Yes, Taylor’s lyrics seem catchy at times but the topics of all her songs remain the same. I hope people will figure out what country is and move her to a new music genre/category.
I’m so upset that Taylor Swift didn’t win entertainer of the year. She is AMAZING. NO offense Blake. I think the reason is she has so many award they thought that there was no more room. Anyway Taylor Swift is awesome. The show was all about Miranda and Blake. Don’t get me wrong they are very talented, but Taylor Swift is beyond talented! She is so many great things word can’t describe. Don’t worry Taylor just keep working on music and keep your head held high. I will ALWAYS believe in you! <3 <3
I don’t see any talent in Taylor Swift at all; at the very best, she should be considered a pop singer but for her to be country music’s sensation??? I just don’t see it at all. She can’t sing worth a darn and her lyrics are completely childish and contrived. But she keeps winning awards. It has to be the young kids who are voting for her. I agree with George Jones that she is a pop singer, not worthy of being called a country music artist.

I am another who is in utter disbelief that TS continues to win awards over all the other extremely talented artists in the industry. Genre is irrelevant IMO. There are simply too many talented people being overlooked whenever another award is given to TS. 90 so far! I agree that she is a fine role model that is very much needed in times when there aren’t many around. She is also a charming personality. Giving her awards based on her vocal ability or writing ability just isn’t right. Talk about “roll model”. What does this tell young artists that are coming up? “Look cute, be sweet and don’t worry about talent…it’s not a requirement!”
I agree with all those who say Taylor Swift can’t sing, I will never know how she keeps on winning. I just watched Amer. music awards and she got 3 of them.What is wrong with people. There are so many the should get it more then her. It makes me sick that she is getting so many of them.I sure hope people wake up soon and see she is not the only singer in the world
I love watching the awards but agree with many that the real stars of country music just don’t get rewarded. Especially Keith Urban. What a talent…and very easy on the eyes

I was disappointed in the award show!!! Taylor Swift should not have won entertainer of the year, about the only people she entertains is her relatives and teenyboppers. She cannot sing! How she won that award over the likes of Keith Urban is beyond me!!! He is so talented what is wrong with people??? do these little teenagers vote over and over, because I cannot believe actual adults with an ear for music would vote for Taylor Swift, she is terrible!! Little Big Town was great by the way.
I actually enjoyed the show much more than I thought I would; Brad and Carrie were genuinely funny and entertaining hosts (yet again) and I enjoyed most of the musical acts – it was great to see Sara Evans back again after a few years away, and I generally agreed with most of the award winners – except, of course, the Entertainer of the Year. I just don’t get Taylor Swift’s appeal – all of her songs sound exactly the same to me and she is completely geared towards the “Justin Bieber” audience, even at nearly 22 years old. She is portrayed as this sweet, young thing, but when the award for Female Vocalist of the Year was announced and all of the nominees were pictured on one screen, did anyone else notice how absolutely PO’d Taylor Swift looked when Miranda Lambert was (so rightly) announced as the winner? I have DVR and was able to rewind that moment to make sure I did actually see Ms. Swift’s extremely negative reaction to Miranda’s win. Miranda blows Taylor off the stage and her win was so justtified; I am so tired of Taylor Swift; she is boring beyond belief. I would have been happy if anyone but her won ‘Entertainer of the Year.’
I view it as a free concert and watch it for the entertainment. Love Carrie & Brad hosting. I do not bash anyone as we have a choice to turn it off. I predicted Taylor would win EOTY because it was decked out with Hollywood glamour and she has been having well known men country singers on her show. She may be young but the gal is smart and can play the game. Perhaps she could go on some dating show until her next tour. The young stars have brought in so many new people to country and I believe now they are embracing them.
CMA stand for Country Music Association: the people voting is the Association of Country Music. It is all politics. Brooks from Kix and Dunn is the president. He even says it is politics. Educate yourselves
I was happy to see that the show was finally back to being about country music stars and Kid Rock and Cheryl Crow weren’t on. (hopefully Kid stayed home to wash his hair). I can’t figure out how those two always managed to insert themselves into every country event when they are not country singers. Oh there were the rock singers in the duets, but still it was, for the most part, about country singers.
I love how washed up pop singers think they can switch over and do country. Maybe it will work, but it seems kinda pathetic… cough cough Lionel Ritchie.
I hope Keiths throat surgery goes well. I am in shock that Keith Urban didn’t win anything. I thik country music is suffering with all of these young kids popping in and the young people voting for them. For example put Keith up next to any one of them (need I say more.)
It was a terrible show. I watched it mainly to see and hear KEITH URBAN I just cannot believe he isn’t winning. It sure isn’t being judged on talent or he would win. I think Brad and Carries jokes were very hurtful, even to Brads wife,she laughed but i don’t think she really wanted to. Carrie you do have nice looking legs (like millions of other people) we’ve seen them, you can wear a long gown once in a while now.I think the teenagers are taking over country music which makes it not much fun to watch.
They seemed to be the best award show yet. A lot of performances from a lot of great artist. Lionel Richie that was awsome especially when they sang with my favorite country group Rascal Flatts. Glen Campbell’s tribute was a tear jerker. He will never be forgotten for his wonderful music. I wish the industry though would stop punishing artist who they don’t think are country. Maybe they should go to one of their concerts and see why we love them they way we do.
I do not understand how The Band Perry won so many awards. They sound miserable. Same with Taylor Swift! Entertainer of the Year!? Anyone else nominated deserved it more than her. I didn’t even know she came out with a CD this year. As for Carrie and Brad, I loved them hosting. They are too funny. Faith Hill’s performance along with others (Zac Brown Band, Rascall Flatts, etc) were very boring. Overall…i’d give the show 2/5 stars. I was pretty disappointed in it.

The Band Perry were great I am now a fan and I love Lady Antebellum! As for Taylor swift,it seems to me that as a child (as so many of you have stated )she is writing from her perspective AS A CHILD and is not hurting anyone. She writes about what she knows and as we all know growing up is hard no matter who you are. Taylor Swift is no longer a little girl. She’s..what..21? But all her songs have the maturity of a 14 yr old. When Loretta Lynn and LeAnn Rimes were 14 years old they were not singing songs about some boy being mean. Sheesh. It makes me sick that 1) she was the ONLY female to be nominated as Entertainer of the Year AND 2) how she could seriously be considered better that all the other nominees. Sick! This years show was boring (Ms. Piggy!) and not worth the time I spent watching it. Did we really need to see an Adam Lambert-esque performance with bondage-dressed women dancing around metal chairs?? ICK

He’s worked long and hard, plays guitar like crazy, sings country, and is just an all around great performer. May I add that he is also HOT?

Keith Urban deserves to win along with so many other true country singers that are real entertainers. Please put Taylor Swift into some place other then country. She does not have talent.

I thought it was an excellent show, quickly paced, amusing and ended right on time, which is more than the Oscars can say. Brad and Carrie are perfect hosts…the intro was hilarious. Taylor Swift is the least country girl that I know and all of her songs sound like the same one to me. She may be a lovely girl but that is not what Entertainer of the Year is about. Keith Urban totally deserved that award. Faith needs to eat a cheeseburger or two and fire the person who did her makeup and hair. Loved all of the real country girls performances and of course Keith:)
Well he we go again everyone jumping on the bandwagon to trash Taylor Swift. Folks y’all have your favorites and that’ fine but there is no reason to be ugly towards Taylor. She is a talented young lady with a distinct voice. She writes most of the songs she sings. I understand you say she has not paid her dues to earn entertainer of the year, but you know what she has done? She has helped bring a new fanbase to country music and the fact be told I thank her for all her hard work.
LOVED Brad & Carrie’s opening. Loved that Jason Aldean finally won something. He is so deserving & lots more country than Taylor! I’m hoping that Jason’s win shows a shift back toward REAL country in the likes of Alan Jackson & George Strait!!

I was disappointed in the sound throughout the show. I agree with those of you who wonder how Taylor Swift was named Entertainer of the Year when she was competing against the amazing talent of an artist like Keith Urban. Nothing personal against Taylor, but the truth is she isn’t qualified to even be considered in the same category as Keith when it comes to vocal, performance, or music ability. Keith is an incredible performer, and he deserved to win Entertainer of the Year! Martina McBride is always classy and her voice is beyond amazing. I was surprised by the appearance of Faith Hill too, and agree her hair and clothing was all wrong. She didn’t look the least bit comfortable on stage or sound right either. I’ve always been a fan, but I hardly recognized her voice last night, and I’ve never seen her do those odd movements she was doing during her song. Brad and Carrie are great as hosts together, and they kept the show going. The tribute to Glen Campbell was a highlight of the show for me.
I really miss the old days when a song was unmistakably “Country” and you recognized the voice of the true country singer as soon as you heard it. To be honest, we’re not hearing to much of that these days!
What’s with ZAC BROWN and GREG ALMAN? Tribute to GEORGIA and they cannot get the words out right? Carrie’s wardrobe changes got worse as the evening progressed. Did she make them herself? Loved the tribute to Glen Campbell. It was worth the wait, but is anyone else upset that they brought him up onstage and gave him a guitar, then cut away to a commercial? When he was sitting in the audience you could see him mouthing the words to his songs. It brought tears to my eyes. I just thought LET THE MAN SING, FOR GODSAKE! If they were worried about him messing up Vince or Keith could have stepped in and sang with him.
I enjoyed the awards show very much, especially the opening with Carrie and Brad. I, like so many others, do not understand Taylor Swift winning the enertainer of the year award when so many talented stars qualify. I especially enjoyed Lady Antebellum, Kenny Chesney, Faith Hill, Martina McBride, Miranda Lambert, etc., the real stars. The Glen Campbell tribute was great; what a sad ending for a great singer who also put on a great show.

As for Taylor winning, it was all about the money. Yes she draws fans, but for the most part, they are only female & young. She does not draw anything in way of a diverse audience. Her shows are “plays”, not concerts. If you have elaborate sets & have to do more than 2 costume changes, it is a play. Keith Urban would have been my choice. I also didnt understand the Band Pery for best new artist. Both Luke Bryan & Eric Church have had numerous #1 hits & drawing great crowds. Church has been getting rave reviews for his latest album.
While Taylor Swift is very cute, she really isn’t a singer. How did she ever get to where she is??? This old-timer keeps comparing her to Martina McBride, Reba McEntire, and Carrie Underwood. Now these ladies can sing. I’m afraid for my money, Taylor isn’t in the same category.
Seriously we waited all year in an anticipation for this? Look I can look past Taylor winning, she does actually have a couple of good songs, and even Faith Hills hair (but barely!!!) But the sound was terrible! And is it just me the show was a little bit boring. And come on Sarah does not need help with whatever that circus act was supposed to be about. What happened to country music being about the music? Sarah’s words in that song got me through a lot of bad days during my divorce and she sings just like Martin from the heart. Now Carrie and Brad you two were the only thing keeping me watching. But when Lionel Richie showed up it was hard not to just turn it off right then. I mean come on!!! They can’t make it in pop and all Have to come to country music. Took me forever to be a Jason A fan, never going to be a Darius R fan and still think Rascall sounds like 38 special even if I do like them. Last night was CRAZY! And two things on these comments 1 – You’re DANG right Keith Urban should be entertainer of the year! 2 – Blake and Miranda were two of the most underappreciated artists in this business (oh and the actually sing COUNTRY music too) and deserve every bit of limelight they get. While you could tell even Miranda didn’t really understand the female vocalist award, she still put on an awesome show as always! (Oh and Luke B I love you, you dirty, dirty boy.) LOL!!!!

Should have been called the CMA-Pop-Rock & Rap Awards Show..with all the artists from other genres showing up who can’t make a living playing their own music any more. So they’ve “gone Country” as Alan Jackson would say. AND I sure didn’t like the cirque du soleil act they had going on during one of the numbers. LORD where is George Jones when you need him!!!!
I loved Brad & Carrie (especially the part where they poked fun at Hank Jr.) I think Brad is just plan funny anyway. He should do the Oscars since they are needing someone to fill in for Eddie Murphy.

It’s strange that Taylor Swift was the only female nominated among the guys when all the other female artist are so much more talented. You know they were voted for, not just Swift.
There is something fishy when Taylor Swift keeps winning the awards that should go to a real SINGER/ARTIST. She has no talent, can’t sing, just acts like a little kid not a 20 something (supposed to be) woman.
There needs to be an investigation done, like Sassy Ann commented, someone is getting paid to put her at the top, there are not that many teenagers voting, I’m sure.
I thought that the show was pretty good. I loved the comedy with Brad and Carrie and most of the entertainment. I am always SOOOO disappointed that Keith Urban never wins. I have seen him 5 times in concert and he is great!!! Definately should be entertainer of the year!!! I thought that Taylor was VERY ungracious in her acceptance of the Entertainer Of The Year Award. She acted very childish and inappropriate in my opinion! Like her even less now.
I was so disappointed in the talent. They had some of the best talent sitting in the audience. Vince Gill should’ve been performing, His voice is so beautiful & pure. Tim McGraw & Faith Hill are great singing together. I don’t understand how Taylor Swift wins every year. She can’t carry a tune in a bucket. Where was all the good Country Music. Brad & Carrie did a good job, but to much funny business and not enough good OLD Country music.
I am really disappointed that Keith Urban hasn’t earned entertainer of the year. I have been to 5 of his Denver Concerts and he is fantastic. Taylor hasn’t paid her dues yet in Country Music and her concerts suck a waste of money. Keith gives you your noneys worth and he has paid his dues. This will be last year I watch the awards shows this was a big disappointment.

I loved Carrie Underwood and Brad Paisley, and thought the opening segment was the funniest I had seen in a long time. I agree that the sound was not good, the shag carpet skirt was horrible, and Taylor Swift didn’t come close to being the best entertainer. I love Martina McBride and think she is as beautiful as ever. I also love Faith Hill, but her make-up on the show didn’t do her justice. All in all, I thought it was a great show and enjoyed it thoroughly. Especially Carrie and Brad.
Yes, the sound was terrible as someone mentioned- when the amazing vocals of Martina McBride sound flat/ off one has to know it is the fault of the producers/ sound people. And the normally always lovely Faith Hill had on awful clothes/ make-up/ hair and was trying to do some rock and roll moves in that last song..not her best anything. Also, if the artists truly don’t know until their names are called as they claim, Swift seemed awfully prepared w/ all those she wanted to thank written on her hand. Even if she didn’t know, that was SO tacky. She could have given a post it note sized paper to her manager or someone sitting near her earlier in the night and told them to pass it to her IF she won and her name was called. She also belongs with the Justin Beiber genre, not CMA.

My major thought of the evening was- how in the heck does Martina McBride get prettier and never age year after year???? If she has had work done or has even used Botox, one would never know it because she looks so natural. Vince Gil on the other hand, I seriously would not have known it was him had they not announced it. He needs to lose some weight as he looks unhealthy and well, sorry, but bloated in the face.
One of the worse award shows I have ever seen in my life. It s sad no one could put together a better program. This show just didn’t have the talent of past award shows. Supposed to be “country music” – that is a total joke.These performers don’t know what “country music” really is, or if they DO know they do a p___P__ job singing it. Boring show.
I don’t know how Taylor Swift won Entertainer of the Year. After hearing all the great country singers before her, you can tell that her voice is not very good. She can’t hit any high notes and she hits many clinkers! Everyone of her songs sound the same.

Why should Taylor Swift stop singing children’s songs? She is a child, she’s singing from her view point from where she is in life right this moment. Do you want to sex her up and make her Britney Spears? Taylor’s writing will mature as she gets older and she has different experiences. I love her songs because they take me back to that age and those feelings.

Near the beginning of the show, who was the female performer who had obviously been running late and just gathered up the living room shag carpet and pinned it around her waist as a skirt, using her cami as a top? Then Carrie Underwood decided to top it at the end by using her living room drapes to make her dress!

Has anybody ever heard of Jamey Johnson? Real country at it’s core. They are so commercialized. Especially poor little Taylor Swift. I felt sorry for her. One of these days she will have to grow up and stop singing children’s songs. The awards are so fake. Let’s just call it the Blake and Miranda show. Now it’s worth watching.
