Before we get to movies, thanks for all your feedback yesterday on Miranda Lambert. There’s one celebrity newlywed with a truly devoted fanbase. Now, as we ease into the first weekend of November, there’s a chill in the air (even in Southern California) and we’re starting to see movies with a holiday bent. A Very Harold and Kumar 3D Christmas is just such an animal, and it’s likely to be one of the weekend’s most popular. Once again we get John Cho, Kal Penn, and Neil Patrick Harris; this one takes place a few years after the dudes have exited Guantanamo Bay. This movie will be fun, raucous, raunchy and it’ll occupy an audience that’s largely male, under 40, and probably high.
Meanwhile, possibly interchangeable with the aforementioned audience (only this one will appeal to an even larger crowd) we have Tower Heist. Which is all about a group of regular guys – trodden upon and manipulated by one rich businessman – who decide to take the law into their own hands. It’s the ultimate revenge comedy and heist movie all in one. It’s also one of the most star-laden big budget numbers to come along in a while: Eddie Murphy, Ben Stiller, Alan Alda, Casey Affleck, Gabourey Sidibe, and Tea Leoni head up a huge cast. Plus Brett Ratner (Rush Hour, X Men) directed, so you know there will be effects galore. Ratner’s also producing the Academy Awards so we know why Eddie Murphy’s got the top job there this year, too. It’s been a long time since Murphy appeared in human form and minus wigs or prosthetic devices – hence there’s a lot ridng on Tower Heist but I suspect it’ll do gangbusters. Besides, given the economic climate today, and all the people fed up and protesting corporate greed, how could it not?
So these two movies are made for very specific audiences and both are likely to do well. The next movie opening has three stars whose fan base(s) could not be more different. As in Channing Tatum. And Al Pacino. And Juliette Binoche. I cannot even imagine the casting process behind this one. But that’s who stars in The Son of No One, which appears to be a gritty shoot ‘em up about a young police officer who winds up on a beat in his old neighborhood. There, we learn, the ghosts of his past are more than ready to welcome him home with open arms (and more than a few dark secrets). I don’t think this movie will have a huge fan base in theaters, but I do believe its post-cineplex shelf life will be impressive.
That’s it – just three big movies in theaters this weekend, although there’s certainly no shortage of flicks to catch out there (Moneyball, Ides of March come to mind as super worth it). My guess is that there would have been more movies opening this weekend until a few of the studios realized if they waited a week and opened on ”11/11/11″ that would be a much cooler way to go. Ratner actually directed X-Men: The Last Stand, Bryan Singer directed X-Men.
I’m looking forward to seeing A Very Harold and Kumar 3D Christmas. The first two were hilarious and this one looks to be even better by using fantastic uses for 3D. Plus even more NPH!

I saw Puss and Boots 3D last weekend and Tower Heist last nite .. I liked both . Ben Stiller brings out the best in Eddie Murphy.
Loved the background detail in Puss and Boots… One thing that kinda bothered me … baby geese can’t lay eggs.. but otherwise it was really cute and see it in 3D .. Tower Heist was just plan FUN
