Happy Fourth: Will You Catch Transformers or Larry Crowne?

Where have all the great movies gone?

Oh wait…before I forget, Happy Fourth of July. Have you plans that involve sleeping, eating, drinking, swimming, socializing or an amalgam of these? Typically on Fridays I’m usually chomping at the bit to talk about movies unless they were made by Michael Bay or they feature massive movie stars in what look like tediously “thoughtful” roles. But of course it is a beeeg summer holiday long weekend and for that, I am most grateful. Are you psyched for fireworks? Do they scare you at all? When you were little, did two of your four dogs become so terrified by the noisy fireworks in your hometown that they jumped onto the linoleum kitchen counter, causing the small TV perched there to tip into the vegetable sink where it was soon ruined by the leaky faucet that no one had gotten around to fixing yet?  That’s what happened to us. We came home and there was the TV in the sink, and the two golden retrievers cowering under the kitchen table. I’ve been leery of fireworks ever since, even though I’ve managed to get some distance from that event in the thirty-five years since it happened.

Movies. Okay …Transformers: Dark of the Moon. Michael Bay’s behemoth which will likely be immensely popular. That’s the one with the cars who morph into living, furious, fighting cars. It’ll make bazillions of dollars and I have already talked to at least six people between the ages of twenty-two and twenty-six today who absolutely cannot wait to see it. Shia LaBeouf stars alongside newcomer Rosie Huntington-Whitely. She’s replaced Megan Fox (who – though stunningly beautiful – was reportedly just a little bit too Megan Fox-y on the set).  If you’re a fan of the franchise you’ll be pleased to note that in this latest film,  “The Autobots learn of a Cybertronian spacecraft hidden on the Moon” so that should clear up any questions you might have concerning plot developments.

For the older crowd another big movie in theaters this weekend: Larry Crowne. This looks like a must-see for anyone who loves Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts (which I do) and who also enjoys an aspirational story of one man who gets a second chance at life by going back to school (perhaps the stars are what’s most important here). There’s also a very cute motor scooter involved, and another interesting feature – the movie was written by both Hanks and My Big Fat Greek Wedding’s Nia Vardalos. Which means it’ll probably be funny.

For tweens, there’s Monte Carlo with Selena Gomez and Leighton Meester. This comedy involves hijinks, scrambled identities, and additional crazy plot twists – all of them set in the elegant European resort from which the movie takes its name. This looks like a lot of fun if you are thirteen and it even looks fun if you’ve been charged with escorting several thirteen-year-olds to the cineplex due to the luxe locale, clothes, and accompanying scenery – which will no doubt be spectacular.

That’s what’s opening in theaters   – but of course it is the Fourth of July weekend so you have any number of films at your disposal, should you crave darkness, air-conditioning and an escape from the em, festivities. Have a safe and wonderful holiday!
