Fortunately it’s Friday, for so many reasons. Not the least of which is that we have the Grammy Awards on Sunday (my primary interest is seeing a) Gwyneth and Cee Lo, b) Muse, and finally, c) watching Mumford & Sons not win. Even though I think they should.) However I’m sure Lady Gaga’s got something interesting or at least vaguely provocative up her sleeve (or whatever fabric/substance/body part/political statement acts as her ‘sleeve’ Sunday night). Plus, I’m really into Eminem now too since he made what I thought was an awesome Chrysler ad. Let’s ignore the fact that I frequently regard publicity- seeking actors with disdain, and yet my own opinion of a controversial hip-hop artist is triply- enhanced by his simple appearance in an automobile commercial. To which he in no way contributed. Nice. See what a rich, full life I lead?
Movies. Because they’re my favorite weekend go-to option. They’re my favorite weekday go-to option too; I just can’t always find someone to watch them nonstop. First up, we have an Adam Sandler relationship comedy called The Dilemma Just Go With It. It’s actually a remake of a Broadway play they turned into a movie from the 1960’s called Cactus Flower (bring that up at a party and see who knows that. Starring Goldie Hawn, Ingrid Bergman and Walter Matthau. You’re welcome.) Will people watch Just Go With It? I bet they will. It’s certainly a cuter premise than man-torn-between-telling-his-best-friend-that-his-wife-is-cheating thing. Plus, let us never underestimate the power of Jennifer Aniston.
Next up, for the kids we have Gnomeo & Juliet…which is the story of Shakespeare’s original star-crossed duo as told with garden gnomes. That’s right. With the (winning, attractive, hopefully irresistible) voices of James McAvoy and Emily Blunt. I’ve never seen a gnome movie. However I won’t rule it out, especially since Elton John’s got a song in it. But the real reason I probably won’t see it immediately is this: I can’t wait to see Cedar Rapids, the brand new comedy starring Ed Helms (The Hangover), Anne Heche (Men In Trees), John C. Reilly (many funny movies), Mike O’Malley (Glee), and thousands of other really hilarious people. Cedar Rapids is about a guy who gets transferred to the title town and where, evidently nothing goes as planned. They had me at Starring Ed Helms.
Then of course we have Justin Bieber’s Never Say Never which will no doubt be very popular. It charts the wonder kid’s meteoric rise to fame. Evidently a lot of the film chronicles the period when The Bieb made his most critically acclaimed & artistic breakthroughs: June, July, and August 2010. Truthfully, the buzz on this film is actually quite good and I have to say I get just a little more curious each time I see the trailer.
But nothing comes before Cedar Rapids. Have a great weekend.
