R I P Dixie Carter, Tina Fey & Steve Carell’s Big “Night”

By People's Choice | 8:55 am on April 12, 2010

Hope you had a great weekend. Today we have an obituary for a real TV legend. Actress Dixie Carter, star of TV and film, and wife of actor Hal Holbrook has succumbed to cancer at age 70.   A multitalented performer (who also starred on Broadway) with a knack for bringing steely Southern women to life, Carter was perhaps best known as Julia Sugarbaker on the long-running series, “Designing Women”. Viewers may also recall  her recent  Emmy-nominated star turn on “Desperate Housewives” in 2007. Holbrook, to whom Carter was married for 26 years, has asked all to please respect the family’s privacy in the wake of this tragedy. Carter is also survived by two daughters. So RIP to a true southern belle who brought class and charm to a long and popular career. Our condolences go out to her family. Moving on, we wish today a happy birthday to David Letterman,  Shannen Doherty, Andy Garcia and Ed O’Neill. And in movie news, only one new release in theatres –  Date Night (with Tina Fey and Steve Carell), — dared take on the current box office champs with their special effects and massive fanbase. However, this time the caper comedy about mistaken identity took on the big boys and actually won the box office race, eking past Clash of the Titans and Dragon. Which just goes to show you that sometimes two really sharp actors who specialize in making fun of themselves can generate $27 million bucks just on their chemistry alone. (In this blogger’s opinion, the film definitely earned its keep and also features a pretty awesome supporting cast). Now speaking of Tina Fey, did anyone catch her on “SNL”,  where she returned with her Sarah Palin impersonation? In fact, NBC had quite a popular show on its hands Saturday because in addition to Fey, the evening also boasted insanely beloved singing sensation Justin Bieber. The 16-year-old Canadian boy wonder proceeded to belt out two numbers, sending tweens (who presumably had to watch the DVR’d version yesterday) into fits of histrionic devotion & tears.  Now, if you are — or have ever been –  a fan of “SNL” , today’s poll is just for you. Because over the years the show has presented all manner of groundbreaking  political impersonators. So, with this in mind, voice your choice in today’s featured poll and let us know which of these four  “SNL” actors-playing-politicians is your favorite?

1)    Will Ferrell as George W. Bush

2)    Dana Carvey as George H.W. Bush

3)    Tina Fey as Sarah Palin

4) Darrel Hammond as Bill Clinton

Dixie Carter was a truly wonderful lady. Have a lot of great memories of her performances. Being the same age (70), I think of her as to young to pass on. Condolences & prayers to her family. Many thanks for sharing her with us for all these years.
