Showtime, Folks!

Mary Louise Parker in Weeds

Mary Louise Parker in Weeds

I watched the Season 5 premiere of Weeds on Showtime last night, followed by the series premiere of Nurse Jackie. I’m exhausted! Monday nights on Showtime are starting to feel an awful lot like Sunday nights used to be on HBO: filled with smart programs featuring lovably flawed characters. I’m already addicted to Nurse Jackie and Weeds after just one viewing (“addicted” being the optimal word, given the herbal and manufactured drugs that play leading roles in their characters’ lives.)

I won’t give away plot points in case you haven’t had a chance to see last night’s shows yet, but let’s just say that both Mary Louise Parker’s Nancy Botwin and Edie Falco’s Jackie Peyton are good women who make bad choices.  Throw in Michael C. Hall’s title character in Dexter (which returns to Showtime this fall), and you’ve got some of the freshest, most fleshed-out characters in television today all residing on the premium cable channel.

Which is your favorite Showtime show? Voice your choice in today’s featured poll. And if you’re not currently a Showtime subscriber, call your cable company immediately. As far as addictions go, these won’t hurt you.
