Everybody Cut Footloose

I’m not one of those movie purists who thinks it’s sacrilege to remake a “classic” film. When Julia Ormand played Sabrina in the title roll originated by Audrey Hepburn, I was all for it. When Lindsay Lohan filled Jodie Foster’s sneakers in Freaky Friday, I said, “Bring it on!”

So I was thrilled when Paramount announced their remake of Footloose. After all, every generation should have their own Ren and Ariel (played by Kevin Bacon and Lori Singer, respectively, back in 1984.)

Zac Effron was originally attached to play the lead in the new film but turned it down to avoid being categorized as the High School Musical song-and-dance man. Now Gossip Girl‘s Chace Crawford has signed on to play Ren, and it’s rumored that Hayden Panettiere is considering the role of Ariel. It won’t come out until 2010, but I’m already wondering when I can buy my tickets. First comes a Fame remake this fall and now Footloose next year. It’s an embarassment of riches! A Flashdance remake can’t be far behind.

Who’s your fantasy Ren:  the guy who originated the role, the guy who’ll be playing him next, or the guy who turned it down? Voice your choice in today’s featured poll. And let the debate begin as to whether or not this remake should have gotten the greenlight in the first place.

  1. I really enjoyed TMZs coverage of Lindsay Lohan in court yesterday. She was a blubbering idiot. I kinda felt sad for her.
