Star Trek: Brilliant Casting

Zachary Quinto as Spock and Chris Pine as Captain Kirk

Zachary Quinto as Spock and Chris Pine as Captain Kirk

It came as no surprise that Star Trek dominated the box office this past weekend. $76.5 million in three days… not too shabby. I had every intention of seeing it, but I foolishly waited too long to get my tickets and got shut out at my local multiplex. As a result, I’m not in a position to comment on the film itself; I’ll happily leave that up to you all. However, I can say with confidence — without even having seen the movie — that the casting of this origins story is spot on.

Who better to strap on the Vulcan ears of Mr. Spock than Zachary Quinto? He could easily be the long lost love child of Leonard Nimoy, so he’s the perfect choice to play the young Spock. Similarly, Chris Pine’s resemblance to a young William Shatner made him the frontrunner to play Captain Kirk for the maiden voyage of the Enterprise. And it doesn’t hurt that he’s easy on the eyes. And speaking of easy on the eyes, the lovely and talented Zoe Saldana was the born to fill Nichelle Nichol’s shoes as Uhura. Seriously, folks, when’s the last time you saw such a perfectly cast prequel? Voice your choice in today’s featured poll on your favorite bit of casting.  And share your thoughts on the movie below, but spare the spoilers until I get a chance to see it!
